Trigger Management

Identifying and modifying environmental or emotional triggers that increase the likelihood of the behavior.

Motivation Enhancement

Strengthening commitment to change by identifying personal reasons for reducing the behavior and involving supportive family members or friends when appropriate.

Generalization and Maintenance

Applying HRT skills across different settings and situations to build long-term success and prevent relapse.

Habit Reversal Training (HRT)

is an evidence-based treatment that helps individuals reduce repetitive behaviors such as hair pulling (trichotillomania), skin picking (excoriation disorder), nail biting, and certain tics. HRT teaches individuals to recognize the early urges and triggers that lead to these behaviors and replace them with healthier, incompatible responses. Through increased awareness, practical coping skills, and consistent practice, individuals can gain greater control over these behaviors and reduce their impact on daily life.
